Fernandez Gomez 2014 Garnacha

  • Carlos Fernandez and his brothers produce Tempranillo and Garnacha that is zesty and lively, with tremendous energy and lifted aromatics.
  • Bordered by the River Ebro on the South and the towering Cantabria mountains on the North, the Rioja Alavesa region is home to the vineyards owned by family Fernandez Gomez, the majority of which are 80+ years old.
  • Located in the Jewish quarter of Labastida, the winery and family home are composed of four houses. In the earth beneath them exists a framework of four different caves dating back to the 1400s, an excellent space for the cellaring of the wines.
  • Carlos and his brothers scoured the Rioja Alavesa area for higher elevation zones that would produce a Garnacha that is fresher/zestier than most Garnacha from Spain which Carlos considers excessively hot/overripe.

Vintage: 2014 | Wine Type: Red Wine
Varietal: Garnacha
Origin: Spain | Appellation: D.O. Rioja
Elaboration: Hand harvested the 16, 17, and 18th of October 2010, de-stemmed, not crushed. 50% of mature stems added back into must. Fermented in steel with one delastage in early ferment. With juice seperated from skins, Carlos then climbs into tank and steps on them to crush carbonic berries. Cool ferment. At the end of fermentation, the wine is put into an equal combination of concrete eggs and concrete deposits that line their cave. Lees are stirred daily at dawn by Carlos or his brother (whoever wakes up first). One racking at 6 months. Fine lees added back into wine. Will try with spent white wine lees this coming year. Elegance is the key here not brawn!
Winemaker: Carlos Fernandez

Lifted, crystalline red fruit aromas (think montmercy cherry, raspberry, alpine strawberry) lead into a medium bodied palate showing more red fruit, garrigue, and clove. Lovely with anything involving mushrooms.

Production: 1,200 cases | Alcohol: 13.5% | TA: 5.10 g/l |Residual Sugar: 1.5 g/l | pH: 3.48
