Martino Old-Vine 2013 Malbec Reserva

About the Producer
  • The 18.5 acre estate vineyard is situated at 3850 feet above sea level in Agrelo, a sub-district within the Luján de Cuyo appellation of Mendoza. The ungrafted Malbec vines were planted in 1926.
  • Stylistically, Fincas Don Martino stands solidly in the old-school camp, with savory aromatics (cigar bands, polished leather, coffee) balancing floral lift.
  • Consultant winemaker is Attilio Pagli, a Tuscan winemaking legend who now spends a great deal of time in Mendoza consulting and exploring the full extent of old-vine Malbec’s expression.
About the Wine

Martino "Reserva" Malbec comes from the lowest yielding block at the Eastern end of the Vina Violeta property. Grapes from this end produce a wine with more structure and concentration due to reduced yields of only 1 kilo per plant. The wine also sees twice as much time in oak, adding a soft, seductive "vanillin" quality to the finished bottling. We recommend decanting one hour before serving, and love it with grilled lamb.

Vibrant color intensity with blue, purple, and black tones.  In the nose, aromas of plum jam, cassis, and raspberry.  Complex due to the aging in wood, highlighting the cloves, vanilla, and tobacco notes.  The palate is structured, with sweet and balanced tannins.
